And Now, Back to Your Local News…

muddy_trail_meter

Since the weather’s getting better, I’m sure we’re all totally jonesing to get onto the trails, but in general, they’re a mess. It’s a bummer to see nice singletracks get trashed and widened, so like all of you, I’m grinding my teeth in annoyance while I try to be patient.

The good news is that you can check out the conditions on this website rather than rely on word of mouth or driving there to see for yourself. Check it out.

UPDATE: March 8:   As commenter JDub so kindly provided below, you can follow/tweet to @boco_trails on Twitter, with even more timely updates. Cheers!

Breaking News

If anyone out there was planning on riding Picture Rock this weekend, be forewarned that it’s closed.

I got this from the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance today:

“The Wild Turkey and Picture Rock trails have been temporarily closed at Heil Valley Ranch due to concerns for damage to the trail surface and surrounding vegetation.
Wapiti, Ponderosa Loop and Lichen Trails will remain open.
Current trail conditions in the lower elevation Front Range are generally poor due to the recent moisture, warm temperatures and freeze/thaw conditions. Moreover, the slope orientation and soil type exacerbate the problem even more for these two trails. Finally, with weather forecasting continuing mild temperatures over the weekend, staff has initiated this temporary closure. Signs are being posted today. The two trails will reopen when staff make the on-site determination that conditions have improved and are stable.
Feel free to contact Michael Bauer at 303-818-0615 with any questions.”

So if this bums you out, consider doing this instead.

Valmont Bike Park goes to Sea Otter

From Rob Love, VBP committe member:

photoBAM, that number plate just got tagged, Valmont-style!

hey kids:

for those of you lucky enough to be reading this blog from Sea Otter, and for the rest of us that need to live vicariously through pictures showing a little VitaminD, check it out: Mike Eubank of the Valmont Bike Park crew is out at Sea Otter doing his thing along with IMBA getting the word out about the park. Mike is spending his own time and money out there, spreading the gospel! This will definitely get some national attention to the park, and help speed along fundraising and construction.

The IMBA booth is 20×20ft of bike-advocating madness!

The VBP trail map is about as Pro as it gets.

Alright, that’s about it for right now–so if you or someone you know is out in Monterrey, give’em a text, tweet, e-mail, or smoke signal and tell ‘em to get over to the booth and give Mike and the crew some props!

Rob Love, over&out.

…you can’t say that the folks at VBP aren’t doing enough to spread the word. Or else they just needed an excuse to get to Sea Otter. :)

New Trail at Betasso!

NEW TRAIL AT BETASSO

Tough Girls rider Judy Freeman rides the Canyon Loop Trail at Betasso Preserve on Tuesday.

Yes, you read that right — there is discussion of a new trail at Betasso. For those of us who remember the fight against closing Betasso to bikes, it sounds crazy that there could be MORE trail there to ride. Perhaps this is a sign that things are changing around Boulder County for mountain bikers.

However, this stuff doesn’t happen by itself. We need to help and here’s how: The Boulder County Parks and Open Space department is taking public comment about all this. We need to show up and be the sane voices in support.

Here are the details: And note that for your comments to be considered part of the planning process, they must be received in writing. So if you’ve got the time, draft a quick letter. I know you’re all smart enough to come up with your own reasons for the trail, but as Judy pointed out, it will spread out all the users, making the area more enjoyable for hikers, horses and bikes alike.

Boulder County Parks & Open Space Seeks Public Input on Draft Betasso Preserve Management Plan

Boulder County Parks & Open Space has completed a draft management plan for Betasso Preserve and will be hosting a public open house on March 24, 2009, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., to present the plan. The meeting will be held in the Houston Room at the Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s office (1750 33rd Street, Boulder). The public is free to stop by anytime between 4:30 and 8:00 p.m. to view management plan information and talk to Parks & Open Space staff regarding the plan. A presentation of the management plan will be made at 5:00 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. A brief question and answer session will follow each presentation.

The purpose of the open house is to present Parks & Open Space staff’s management recommendations, including a new 4.6-mile multiple use trail and a Habitat Conservation Area, and to solicit public comment on the draft plan. Information regarding the site’s existing natural, cultural, and recreational resources will be presented, as well as information on the proposed future management direction. Staff will be available throughout the night to discuss the management plan and answer questions.

To review the complete draft management plan or provide comments, visit the Parks & Open Space website at <http://www.co.boulder.co.us/openspace/index.htm> (under “Planning and Public Involvement”) or contact the project planner, Ernst Strenge, at 303-678-6269 or betassopreserve@bouldercounty.org.

Please note that in order to be considered in the management planning process, comments from the public must be received in writing. The public comment period will end on April 8, 2009.

A Glimpse of Things to Come

Here’s a sense of what Valmont Bike Park might be like…

This is near Boise, Idaho.

Meanwhile, I was shooting an assignment at the jail yesterday, and I realized anew what a killer view we’re going to have from our park. Eat your heart out, Boise.

But then again, Boise has tons of trails you can ride to from your door. Damn, why can’t we have it all?

Yes, I’m Still Alive

My apologies, folks, I fell off the radar for a while. I hurt my back again, and I was so mad that I just couldn’t think about mountain biking. But I’m getting healthy again and will soon be back at it. In the meantime, get come join me at Boulder CycleSport tonight to scope out the latest site design for the Valmont Bike Park!

Hold Onto Your Baggies!

Picture Rock trail is opening this month!

Here’s the skinny right now:

Picture Rock Trail Grand Opening

September 22, 4pm in Lyons

Come join the Boulder County Commissioners & BCPOS Staff for a ribbon cutting ceremony, and a ride immediately after.

Park at Planet Bluegrass
Ride to the NO PARKING access point along Red Gulch Road.
After the ceremony and ride, return to Planet Bluegrass for a catered party provided by Oskar Blues… BCPOS is going to to this right!

Keep your eye on www.bouldermountainbike.org for any changes to the plan.

Yes, that’s a Monday, but see if you can’t get out early and make this. It should be pretty darn rad.

8,000 Feet

No, not the altitude…the amount of Picture Rock Trail that got built by the hardworking 225 people who showed up for National Trails Day this morning. Sweet!!

This part of the trail, a mile or so above where it drops out onto Red Gulch Road in Lyons, undulates in and out of gullies as it descends, which makes it look seriously fun to ride. Plus, the soil is nice — there’s none of that cake-mix silty stuff you see on the Wapiti/Wild Turkey side of Heil.

Here’s the Delta Force Crew hiking in:

When they hiked back out, the grassy earth was now a trail. That’s what happens when you bring 200 people and Pulaskis.

Rob Love expands his Circle of Death:

Now the rumor is that only 1200 feet remain to connect the two ends. And then you add on some finishing work, and who knows — we could be riding the Heil-Hall connector by late July?? Outstanding.

Huge props to everyone who showed up today. I can’t wait to see the finished product.
