From Rob Love, VBP committe member:
BAM, that number plate just got tagged, Valmont-style!
for those of you lucky enough to be reading this blog from Sea Otter, and for the rest of us that need to live vicariously through pictures showing a little VitaminD, check it out: Mike Eubank of the Valmont Bike Park crew is out at Sea Otter doing his thing along with IMBA getting the word out about the park. Mike is spending his own time and money out there, spreading the gospel! This will definitely get some national attention to the park, and help speed along fundraising and construction.
Alright, that’s about it for right now–so if you or someone you know is out in Monterrey, give’em a text, tweet, e-mail, or smoke signal and tell ‘em to get over to the booth and give Mike and the crew some props!
Rob Love, over&out.
…you can’t say that the folks at VBP aren’t doing enough to spread the word. Or else they just needed an excuse to get to Sea Otter.

If it doesn’t, you should be checked for a pulse.
I’m buying a plane ticket as we speak.

It’s easy to get geeked out on traveling to great locations and then forget the little gems at home.
Betasso Preserve is still a great place to squeeze in that after-work ride.
Now, who’s racing the Winter Park Super D this weekend??

I use that word pretty loosely.
I mean, I put a number on. And got on the start line. Then rode for about three minutes with the other Expert ladies before I began my solo trek through the woods. But, that’s okay. What was important is that I got through the race with pretty minimal back pain, which to me is a huge victory.
And the downhills were a freakin’ blast. My Maverick really is a unfair advantage in that regard. (Bully kid from the Simpson’s voice:) HA HA!!!!
Of course, I quit laughing abruptly when I saw my finish time for the day. But hey, luckily I’m not staking my ego on that kind of thing. It was fun and that’s all I care about.
Huge thanks to my man Rob for helping me out and sunburning himself waiting for me at the finish line. Here’s our rig at the expo area, as the Subaru guy checks out Rob’s bike. Rob had a fun time with the Expert men as well, so we chalked it up to a great day.

Now we are driving on to Salida for a couple of days’ riding and then on to Crested Butte, to join 40 other crazy people for four days of riding over the Fourth. Awesome! And yes, I hope to post some drool-worthy photos of Crested Butte.

Meet Clint Talbott, our editorial page editor.
Ever since he was hired in 1998, I’ve watched him clickety-clack out of the office in his cleats, heading out on lunch rides. And when he returns, I sometimes spot him checking email before he’s even had a chance to get out of his lycra.
He denies it, but you can tell by looking at him that he’s a climbing machine. He hammered a bunch of carbon-bike riding roadies up Flagstaff yesterday on his ancient mtb. “When the legs are strong, I attack!” (Quote stolen, and put to good use, from German racer Andreas Kloden.)
But even though I’m not the world’s greatest climber (sprinting seems to be my thing), that’s not what I’m jealous of.
I’ve never, in my life, gone on a lunch ride.
I’ve turned down endless invitations, watched nearly every cyclist in town enjoying the noonday sun, and wished I were one of them. But when you take on a job as a photojournalist, your life is only partially your own. You become a slave to that fickle master known as “the news.” So I’ve never gone on a lunch ride because at any time, the courthouse could catch fire, a school could get shot up, or a prairie dog could be poisoned. You can’t be out pedaling along 36 when JonBenet Ramsey’s killer comes to light (stop that hysterical laughing — I’m serious, dangit!). For the same reason, I can’t commute to work by bike, either.
So anyway. It’s part of the life I’ve chosen, even though most of those things (except the prairie dogs) are probably never going to happen.
Incidentally, this is Clint’s last week with us, since he’s moving on to take a job with CU. I wonder if he’ll still get to blow off steam by heading up Flagstaff.
So I just wanted to encourage you all — if you’re lucky enough to have the option of lunch rides, take one today. I bet it will really make your day.
